VSTEP expands leadership in the USV sector

07-10-2024 (updated on: 19-05-2026) – Fugro, a global leader in Geo-data, has partnered with VSTEP to enhance training capabilities for remote operators of uncrewed surface vessels. The acquisition of VSTEP’s NAUTIS Simulator allows Fugro to train personnel on their USV fleet using a fully customised simulation solution, further solidifying VSTEP’s position as a trusted provider in the rapidly expanding unmanned surface vessel training sector.

Overview of the Project

The ability to seamlessly integrate Fugro’s GSAVI (Global Situational Awareness Via Internet) software with NAUTIS was pivotal to this collaboration. GSAVI is Fugro’s proprietary platform for real-time situational awareness during remote vessel operations. By connecting GSAVI directly to the NAUTIS simulator, the training environment accurately replicates the actual interface and data flows that operators use when controlling a real uncrewed surface vessel from a Remote Operations Centre.

This level of integration means trainees are not learning on a generic simulator. They are practising on a digital replica of the exact system they will operate in the field.

Why Simulator Training Matters for USV and Remote Operations

Operating an unmanned surface vessel remotely presents challenges that are fundamentally different from conventional bridge operations. Remote operators rely entirely on sensor data, video feeds and situational awareness software rather than direct physical presence on the vessel. Decision-making must be fast, accurate and based on interpreted data rather than direct observation.

Training remote operators in live conditions is costly, operationally disruptive and carries real safety risk. Simulator-based training addresses all three of those constraints. Operators can practise handling complex scenarios including adverse weather, sensor limitations, collision avoidance and emergency procedures without any operational impact or risk to personnel or equipment.

USV simulator training uses a maritime simulation environment to prepare remote operators for the specific demands of controlling unmanned surface vessels from a Remote Operations Centre. Unlike conventional bridge training, it focuses on sensor interpretation, situational awareness software and remote decision-making rather than physical vessel handling. Simulator training allows operators to practise complex and emergency scenarios safely before working with real vessels.

Remote operators of uncrewed surface vessels rely entirely on digital data and software interfaces rather than direct observation. Remote operation is becoming a defined role

When this project started, remote operation of uncrewed vessels sat largely outside international rules. That is shifting. The IMO adopted a non-mandatory Code for maritime autonomous surface ships in May 2026, in force since 1 July 2026, with remote operations named among its subject areas (IMO). A framework describing how remote operations should be conducted implies people who are trained and assessed to conduct them.

There is not yet a dedicated international certification standard for remote operators comparable to STCW for seagoing officers. In its absence the practical route is the one taken here: build competence on a simulator that reproduces the operator’s own interface and data feeds, so moving to a live vessel changes the stakes rather than the workflow. That is why USV simulator training is increasingly specified around the operating software rather than around a generic bridge.
